Soft4FX Alternative — Manual Backtesting Without MetaTrader

Soft4FX is a capable manual simulator, and on raw simulation fidelity it beats us — tick data with real variable spreads, rewind, and more instruments. Its constraint is that it lives inside MetaTrader. BacktestFlow runs in a browser with no install, and measures execution discipline rather than only results.

Where Soft4FX is genuinely the better tool

  • You already work in MetaTrader. Soft4FX runs where your charts and your broker connection already are. That is a real workflow advantage and nothing here replaces it.
  • You want tick data and realistic spreads. 10–20 years of tick data from Dukascopy, TrueFX and HistData, with real variable spreads. BacktestFlow replays OHLC candles and does not model spread at all.
  • You need to rewind. Soft4FX supports rewind during replay. BacktestFlow does not, and that is a straightforward loss on our side.
  • You trade more than forex. Metals, crypto and stock indexes are covered there. BacktestFlow is forex-only.
  • You want an economic calendar in the simulator. Soft4FX includes one with data back to 2007, filterable by importance and currency.

Where BacktestFlow is the better tool

No MetaTrader, no install, no operating system problem

Soft4FX is a plugin, so MetaTrader is a hard prerequisite. If you chart elsewhere — or you are on a Mac, where MetaTrader is a persistent friction point — that is a real cost before you place a single test trade. BacktestFlow opens in a browser tab.

It measures how you executed, not only what you made

Soft4FX reports statistics comparable to MetaTrader's own — solid outcome metrics. What neither MetaTrader nor Soft4FX reports is whether you followed your own process. BacktestFlow tracks checklist adherence, planned versus realized risk-to-reward, position-sizing consistency, and the cost of setups you passed on. Those are the numbers that tell you why a result happened. Seethe full metric list.

The record can't quietly go missing

Replay will not advance while a close is unjournaled, so a session cannot end with half the trades unrecorded. That matters more than it sounds — a backtest you only half-logged is the most common reason traders reacha sample size that means nothing.

Timeframe switching is handled explicitly

History is clamped to the live present edge, and switching timeframe rebuilds the final candle from finer bars so a higher timeframe cannot reveal price that has not happened. Soft4FX does not document its behaviour here either way, so treat this as a difference in what is stated rather than a proven gap.

Which should you use?

Choose Soft4FX

You use MetaTrader daily, you want tick-level fidelity with real spreads, or you need rewind and multi-asset coverage in the simulator itself.

Choose BacktestFlow

You want to backtest without installing MetaTrader — particularly on a Mac — and you care about measuring execution discipline, not just win rate and net profit.

These sit at different points in the process. Soft4FX gives higher simulation fidelity inside a platform you may already run; BacktestFlow gives deeper analysis of how you actually behaved while testing.

Frequently asked questions

What is Soft4FX Forex Simulator?

Soft4FX is a manual backtesting simulator that runs as a plugin inside MetaTrader 4 or MetaTrader 5. You replay historical markets from a chosen date, place trades by hand, and it reports statistics similar to MetaTrader's own. It uses 10 to 20 years of tick data from Dukascopy, TrueFX and HistData, including real variable spreads.

Do I need MetaTrader to use Soft4FX?

Yes. Soft4FX is a plugin, so it requires MetaTrader 4 or 5 installed and running. BacktestFlow needs no installation of any kind — it runs in the browser, which is the main practical difference for traders who do not otherwise use MetaTrader or who work on a Mac.

Does Soft4FX let you rewind the replay?

Yes, Soft4FX lists rewind among its simulation controls alongside pause, resume, speed adjustment and candle stepping. BacktestFlow does not offer rewind — sessions save your replay position so you can leave and resume later, but you cannot step backwards through price that has already played.

Which has better historical data?

Soft4FX. It uses tick data with real variable spreads across roughly 10 to 20 years and covers 60 forex pairs plus metals, crypto and stock indexes. BacktestFlow replays OHLC candles on forex only, and does not model spread. If tick-level fidelity matters to your strategy, that is a genuine reason to choose Soft4FX.

What does BacktestFlow do that Soft4FX does not?

Two things. It runs without MetaTrader, in a browser, on any operating system. And it measures behaviour rather than only outcomes — checklist adherence, planned versus realized risk-to-reward, position-sizing consistency, and the cost of setups you chose not to take. Soft4FX reports MetaTrader-style performance statistics, which cover results but not execution discipline.
