FX Replay Alternative for Forex-Focused Backtesting
FX Replay is the broader platform and wins on breadth — six markets, sub-minute data, a prop firm simulator, custom scripting and Monte Carlo simulation. BacktestFlow is narrower on purpose: forex only, with pip-denominated statistics, session-aware analysis, and metrics that measure execution discipline rather than only results.

Where FX Replay is genuinely the better tool
- You trade more than forex. Six markets and 120+ assets against our one. This alone decides it for most multi-asset traders.
- You need sub-minute granularity. Down to 5-second candles, with history to 2003 on majors from several broker feeds. We do not offer sub-minute data.
- You are preparing for a prop firm challenge. Their Prop Firm Simulator enforces real challenge rules and conditions. We have nothing equivalent today.
- You want to script your own indicators. FXR Script exists for exactly that. BacktestFlow offers built-in studies only.
- You want Monte Carlo projections. Included there; on our roadmap but not shipped, and we will not claim it until it is.
Where BacktestFlow is the better tool
Forex depth instead of market breadth
Statistics are available in pips, sessions are DST-aware so multi-hour candles sit on the right grid, and performance breaks down by trading session as a first-class dimension rather than a generic time filter. A platform serving six markets has to generalise; this one does not.More on session-level analysis.
Metrics for execution, not just outcomes
Both products analyse results. BacktestFlow additionally reports checklist adherence, planned versus realized risk-to-reward, position-sizing consistency, and the cost of setups you chose not to take — the numbers that distinguish a strategy problem from a discipline problem. See the full list andwhy that distinction matters.
An AI layer defined by what it cannot do
Flow Coach's 28 detectors compute findings deterministically and test them for significance before anything is written. The language model may only narrate numbers those detectors produced — it cannot state a figure that was never measured, and it will not report a pattern that failed its test. That is an architectural guarantee, not a claim about output quality.
Journaling you cannot skip
Replay will not advance while a close is unjournaled. A session physically cannot end with half its trades unrecorded, which is the usual reason a backtest ends up too thin to support a conclusion.
Which should you use?
Choose FX Replay
You trade multiple markets, want sub-minute replay, are preparing for a prop firm evaluation, or want custom indicator scripting and Monte Carlo projections.
Choose BacktestFlow
You trade forex and nothing else, and you want analysis that goes deeper on that one market — pips, sessions, and metrics that show whether you actually followed your own process.
Both offer a free plan, so trying each on the same strategy costs nothing but time — and that is a better test than any comparison table.
Frequently asked questions
What is FX Replay?
FX Replay is a browser-based backtesting and trading practice platform. You jump to any historical date and replay price as it unfolded, across forex, futures, stocks, indices, crypto and commodities — over 120 assets, with timeframes from 5-second candles to monthly and history back to 2003 for major pairs. It includes a journal, performance analytics, a prop firm simulator and Monte Carlo simulation.
Is BacktestFlow a full replacement for FX Replay?
No, and it would be misleading to claim otherwise. FX Replay covers six markets to our one, offers sub-minute granularity we do not, and ships a prop firm simulator, custom indicator scripting and Monte Carlo simulation that we do not have today. It is the broader product.
Then why choose BacktestFlow?
For depth on one market rather than breadth across six. Statistics are pip-denominated, session alignment is DST-aware, and performance breaks down by trading session as a first-class dimension. The analysis layer also measures execution discipline — checklist adherence, planned versus realized risk-to-reward, position-sizing consistency, and what the setups you skipped cost you.
How do the AI features differ?
FX Replay's Mentor AI gives feedback on trading behaviour to surface patterns. BacktestFlow's Flow Coach is built around a constraint rather than a capability: 28 detectors compute findings deterministically and run significance tests first, and the language model may only narrate numbers those detectors produced. It cannot state a figure that was not measured, and it will not report a pattern that failed its significance test.
Do both have a free plan?
Yes. FX Replay offers a free tier with no credit card required, and BacktestFlow has a free plan. Since a free option exists on both sides, price is unlikely to be the deciding factor — the choice is better made on market coverage versus forex-specific depth.
