MetaTrader Strategy Tester Alternative for Manual Backtesting

The MetaTrader Strategy Tester is built to test Expert Advisors, and at that job it is excellent and free. What it is not built around is a trader placing trades by hand — manual testing is reached through Visual Mode, plugins, or toolkits traders write themselves. If your strategy is discretionary, you are working against the tool's design.

The clearest sign of the gap

MQL5 — MetaQuotes' own developer community — publishes articles teaching traders to build custom on-chart button toolkits so they can place manual trades inside the Strategy Tester. Titles like "Manual Backtesting with On-Chart Buttons in the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester" and "Manual Backtesting Made Easy: Building a Custom Toolkit for Strategy Tester in MQL5".

You do not write a custom toolkit for a workflow a tool already supports natively. Manual backtesting on MetaTrader is a community workaround, and every hour spent building or configuring one is an hour not spent testing.

Where MetaTrader Strategy Tester is genuinely the better tool

  • Your strategy is, or could be, an Expert Advisor. Coded strategies test faster, more consistently, and across far larger samples than any manual process. Nothing here competes with that.
  • You need parameter optimisation. Sweeping large numbers of variable combinations is a real strength of the tester. BacktestFlow has no equivalent.
  • You want real-tick modelling. BacktestFlow replays OHLC candles and does not model spread at all.
  • You want testing and live execution in one place. MetaTrader is your broker terminal. BacktestFlow neither connects to a broker nor routes orders.
  • Cost is the deciding factor. MetaTrader is free and you almost certainly already have it.

Where BacktestFlow is the better tool

Manual backtesting is the product, not a workaround

No Visual Mode, no plugin, no toolkit to build. Pick a pair and a date and replay the chart forward, placing trades as you would live. More onhow that works here.

Hand-placed trades actually get measured

The tester's report is built to summarise an EA run. Trades you place yourself leave you maintaining a spreadsheet. Here every close is journaled automatically — with a screenshot showing your order lines — and feedsaround 35 statistics, including metrics that describe execution discipline rather than only outcomes.

Nothing to install, and no Windows requirement

It runs in the browser, identically on macOS, Windows and Linux — no terminal, no plugin, no virtual machine. That last point is a recurring cost for Mac traders.

Analysis that respects sample size

Flow Coach runs significance tests before making a claim, and can only narrate numbers the deterministic engine computed — seehow many trades you actually need.

Which should you use?

Choose MetaTrader Strategy Tester

You code your strategies, you want optimisation and tick modelling, or you need backtesting and live execution inside the same terminal.

Choose BacktestFlow

You trade forex discretionarily, your edge depends on judgement that cannot be written as rules, and you want every hand-placed trade recorded and measured without maintaining a spreadsheet.

These are not mutually exclusive — MetaTrader for execution and anything automated, BacktestFlow for testing the discretionary side and analysing how you executed it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you manually backtest in MetaTrader?

You can, but it is not the workflow the Strategy Tester was built around. The usual routes are Visual Mode — running a test with the chart displayed and placing trades yourself — or a third-party plugin. MQL5, MetaQuotes' own developer community, publishes articles on building custom on-chart button toolkits to make manual testing workable inside the tester, which is a reasonable indication that it is not native.

Is the MetaTrader Strategy Tester good for backtesting?

For its actual purpose — testing and optimising Expert Advisors against historical data with real-tick modelling — it is excellent, and free. For a discretionary trader placing trades by hand it is awkward, because the workflow and the performance report are both organised around automated test runs rather than around chart study and individual trade records.

Do I need MetaTrader to use BacktestFlow?

No. BacktestFlow runs in the browser with its own historical data. There is no MetaTrader installation, no plugin, no download, and no broker account required to start — which also removes the virtual-machine step Mac users often face.

Does BacktestFlow connect to my broker or import my trades?

No. There is no broker connection and no automatic trade import. Backtested trades are journaled automatically as you place them; live trades are entered by hand. If automatic broker import is essential to you, a journal platform offering it will serve you better.

Can I backtest an Expert Advisor in BacktestFlow?

No, and this is deliberate rather than a gap we intend to close. There is no scripting or automation layer — BacktestFlow tests strategies traded by hand. For EA backtesting the MetaTrader Strategy Tester is the correct tool, and it is free.
