Feature comparison

Forex backtesting software compared

Seven tools across seventeen features, every cell checked against the vendor's own documentation. BacktestFlow is one of the seven, so read this the way you should read any vendor's comparison — sceptically. The difference is that this one tells you which of the other six to buy, and when.

Read the other comparison tables carefully

Search "best forex backtesting software" and nearly every result is a vendor ranking itself first. TradeZella publishes "10 Best Backtesting Software." Forex Tester publishes "Top 8 Forex Tester Alternatives." FX Replay publishes "4 Tools Compared." Each concludes with itself.

They are not lying, but they are not neutral, and neither are we. The honest response is not to pretend otherwise — it is to make the table useful anyway by saying plainly where each tool wins. BacktestFlow leads exactly one row below.

"Not documented" means the vendor does not state it publicly — not that the feature is absent. Verified August 2026; software changes, so check anything decisive at the source.

Which one should you actually use?

Forex Tester

You want the deepest data. Roughly 23 years of history with tick-level granularity and floating spread on the paid tier, plus offline desktop operation. On data fidelity it beats everything else here.

FX Replay

You trade several markets and want breadth in the browser — six markets, sub-minute candles, a prop-firm simulator, custom scripting and Monte Carlo.

TradeZella

You want automatic broker import across 500+ brokers, automated plain-English backtesting, or tooling for funded accounts. The widest feature set of anything listed.

MetaTrader Strategy Tester

Your strategy is or could be an Expert Advisor. Parameter optimisation and real-tick modelling, free, in the terminal you already trade through.

Soft4FX

You live inside MetaTrader and want tick-accurate manual simulation with rewind, without leaving the platform.

TradingView Bar Replay

You want free practice inside charts you already use, and you are not going to analyse the results systematically.

BacktestFlow

You trade forex discretionarily, you want nothing to install on any OS, and you want to measure whether you followed your own process — not just what the equity curve did.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best forex backtesting software?

There is no single answer, and any comparison that gives you one is usually written by the tool it recommends. For data depth, Forex Tester leads with roughly 23 years and tick-level granularity. For market breadth in a browser, FX Replay covers six markets. For broker import and analytics breadth, TradeZella. For testing coded strategies, the MetaTrader Strategy Tester, free. BacktestFlow is the narrowest of these: forex-only manual replay that measures execution discipline.

Which backtesting software works on a Mac without a virtual machine?

The browser-based ones: BacktestFlow, FX Replay, TradeZella and TradingView Bar Replay all run natively on macOS. The MetaTrader Strategy Tester and Soft4FX require Windows, and Forex Tester's desktop application does too — their own guide describes running it on a Mac through Parallels. Forex Tester Online is their browser alternative.

Which tools let you backtest without any coding?

All of the manual replay tools: BacktestFlow, Forex Tester, FX Replay, Soft4FX, TradingView Bar Replay, and TradeZella's manual mode. You step through historical candles and place trades yourself. The MetaTrader Strategy Tester is the outlier — it is built around coded Expert Advisors, and manual testing there is a workaround.

Which one has the best historical data?

Forex Tester, on the evidence available. Roughly 23 years from May 2003, with 1-minute bars free and tick-by-tick data with floating spread on the paid Super Data package covering as many as 860 symbols. Soft4FX also offers tick data with real variable spreads over 10 to 20 years. BacktestFlow replays OHLC candles only and does not model spread.

Why does this comparison recommend competitors?

Because on most measures they are better, and telling you otherwise would waste your time and ours. BacktestFlow is narrow by design. If a comparison table never sends you elsewhere, it is a sales page wearing a table's clothes — including when the table belongs to us.
